What To Do if You Might Possibly Have an STI

STIs, or sexually-transmitted Infections, plague millions of people of all ages. Potentially damaging to overall health, interpersonal relationships, and fertility, STIs are nothing to ignore. At Serenity Gynecology & Functional Medicine in Grapevine, TX, Dr. Miriam Torres treats a wide range of gynecological conditions, including STIs. She wants patients fully informed about their prevention and treatment.

What is an STI?

A sexually-transmitted infection is a viral, bacterial, or fungal disease spread by close sexual contact or vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Unfortunately, about 20 million Americans receive the diagnosis of an STI each year, reports the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Many of these sufferers are adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 24.

Common sexually-transmitted infections include:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Human papillomavirus
  • HIV
  • Chlamydia
  • Hepatitis

All of these diseases can be treated and/or managed. However, prompt testing is key to optimal health. While some people exhibit symptoms of an STI, others may be only mildly ill or even completely asymptomatic. So, if you suspect this gynecological condition or have multiple partners, you should be tested.

Symptoms of STIs

There are many symptoms and may include:

  • Itching and rash
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Genital, oral, or anal sores
  • Pain with sex
  • Pain upon urination

Again, symptoms vary from person to person. It's important to inform your spouse or partner(s) of your concerns and tell them to get tested as well. This strategy helps avoid the additional spread of an STI.

Prevention of STIs

The American Sexual Health Association recommends the following practices as effective measures against STIs:

  1. Abstinence from all sexual contact
  2. Monogamy, or one partner only
  3. Protection with consistent and proper use of a condom
  4. Getting tested for STIs before beginning an intimate relationship
  5. Limiting or completely abstaining from alcohol and recreational drugs
